Sports Betting Pools

One form of sports betting is widespread and popular amongst diverse groups of people all over the globe. This type is known as the betting pool. It may also be referred to as a sports lottery or sweep. Popular in offices, this type of betting may also be called an office pool. Pools have a specified price that allows people to participate in the pool. Participants would pay their fee and specify what result they think will occur. Once the event has ended, the amount of money gathered in the pool, would be equally distributed to the winners. The payoff depends upon how many people participate in the pool, which is similar to a lottery jackpot. Hence, the name sports lottery.

Pool betting began in 1923. The first pool occurred at a place known as Littlewoods in the United Kingdom. It was developed by a man named Sir John Mores. At that time pool bets on the results of football matches. Currently in the United Kingdom they are more commonly known as sports lotteries. Wagers are made regarding the results of football association matches.

In North America, hockey pools are common. In these pools, players draft and acquire a team using current professional hockey players. Of course, these trades and teams exist on paper only. Points are earned depending upon how well a team's players perform. In Australia, pool betting is done but in the Land Down Under it is known as footy tipping.

This type of sports betting has become so popular that some websites have been developed. These sites allow users to create a pool over a particular sport. The sport would of course need to be one supported by the website. The site then tracks the pool. Additionally, it provides participants with numerous statistics regarding the sport chosen for the pool. Online sports pools are appealing to many. They make it easier to keep track of a pool and minimize the record keeping involved. Also, these types of sites make it more difficult for cheating to occur. Pool betting continues to be a popular form of sports betting no matter where it takes place.
